(SUNSET) is proud to announce that it has been selected as the winner of the Solar Recycling Challenge, Phase II, sponsored by the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program at Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC). This initiative is designed to accelerate innovative, scalable, and market-ready solutions for managing end-of-life solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.
The Solar Recycling Challenge supports the development of a pioneering technology to advance Canada’s circular economy, recover critical and strategic materials, and reduce the environmental and economic impacts of solar panel waste as domestic and global solar capacity continues to expand. SUNSET’s solution was evaluated on technical feasibility, environmental consideration, scalability, and commercial viability.
SUNSET was selected to develop a prototype for its first-of-its kind mobile, decentralized solar recycling technology, which enables on-site and regional processing of early loss and end-of-life solar panels. The approach aims to minimize transportation emissions, improve material traceability, and maximize the recovery of high-value critical minerals and materials essential to clean energy supply chains.
The company’s solution directly supports the challenge priorities by:
- Extending the lifecycle of renewable energy assets
- Reducing landfill disposal and environmental risk
- Strengthening domestic recycling and critical materials recovery capacity
- Enabling scalable deployment across diverse geographic regions
